Prof. Dr. Marcelo Merello
Comprometido con una sólida formación en trastornos del movimiento y especializado en cirugía de Parkinson (DBS, HIFU), Marcelo cuenta con una destacada trayectoria en el campo, marcada por un riguroso entrenamiento y una profunda pasión por la investigación. Su trabajo se ha centrado principalmente en la aplicación de conocimientos para el estudio de los movimientos anormales. A lo largo de los años, ha tenido el privilegio de contribuir a la formación de jóvenes especialistas en trastornos del movimiento. Esta experiencia no sólo ha enriquecido su perspectiva, sino que también lo ha preparado para guiar y mentorear a la próxima generación de clínicos-investigadores.

En resumen, su trayectoria en el ámbito de los trastornos del movimiento ha proporcionado una combinación única de conocimiento, experiencia y un espíritu colaborativo. Está dedicado a ampliar los límites de nuestro entendimiento en este campo, fomentando la innovación y nutriendo el crecimiento de profesionales emergentes. Su meta es seguir realizando contribuciones significativas al estudio de los trastornos del movimiento, tanto como investigador como mentor para aquellos que darán forma al futuro de este dinámico campo. Su último y principal objetivo es mejorar la calidad de vida de los pacientes y sus familias, ofreciendo las terapias más avanzadas para enfrentar estas enfermedades.
Formación y Experiencia
Nacido en Argentina en 1961, Marcelo J. Merello se graduó de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Buenos Aires en 1987, donde luego obtuvo su doctorado. Completó su residencia en medicina interna en CEMIC y luego se especializó en neurología en FLENI, ambos en Buenos Aires. El Dr. Merello fue Investigador Asociado en Neurología en el Hospital Nacional de Enfermedades Nerviosas, Queen Square, y se desempeñó como Investigador Registrador en Neurología en el Hospital Middlesex, ambos en Londres.
Actividad Profesional y Científica
Actualmente, es el jefe de la Sección de Trastornos del Movimiento en el Instituto Raúl Carrea de Investigaciones Neurológicas (FLENI) en Buenos Aires y se desempeña como director de Neurociencia en el mismo instituto. El Prof. Dr. Merello enseña en la Universidad de Buenos Aires y es Profesor de Neurología en la Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA). Es miembro del consejo de doctorado en la Universidad de Buenos Aires y director de la carrera de Neurología en FLENI. También es Investigador Clínico Principal en CONICET Argentina. El doctor Merello es Miembro de la Sociedad Mundial de Parkinson y otros movimientos Anormales (IP-MDS) y de la Sociedad Mundial de trastornos neurológicos Funcionales (FMDS) El Prof. Dr. Merello es coautor de más de 280 artículos en revistas de peer review en su campo y ha hecho más de 400 presentaciones en congresos y simposios internacionales sobre la enfermedad de Parkinson, distonía y otros trastornos del movimiento. Ha escrito más de 20 capítulos de libros y ha coeditado seis libros. Además, fue miembro de la junta editorial de Movement Disorders Journal y es el Editor Fundador de una de las publicaciones líderes en el campo, Movement Disorders Clinical Practice, donde se desempeñó como editor durante diez años. Es el único médico latinoamericano que ha recibido el premio Edmond Safra Fellowship en dos ocasiones (2020 y 2024), así como el Premio Científico Clínico de la Fundación Michael J. Fox. El Dr. Merello fue el primer profesional en implantar dispositivos de estimulación cerebral profunda (DBS) para trastornos del movimiento en América Latina y dirige el programa más prestigioso de cirugía para trastornos del movimiento en FLENI, además de dirigir la clínica de terapias avanzadas para la enfermedad de Parkinson. Actualmente, el Dr. Merello está involucrado en la aplicación de Hifu (cirugía por ultrasonido) para el tratamiento de la enfermedad de Parkinson y varios tipos de temblores. Ha dirigido diez tesis y ha mentoreado a casi un centenar de becarios de toda América Latina.
